Growing up, I never attended church, spoke of Jesus, sin, nor salvation. I battled depression as a child and suffered numerous medical illnesses, including chronic migraines. I found myself in a constant state of suffering and spiritual isolation. I was a child desperate for answers. Life made no sense because of my suffering, and no one seemed to have any answers. I remember asking my parents about God, but they couldn't tell me anything that helped. In my teenage years, I found myself attracted to the New Age arts of astrology, numerology, and transcendental meditation. I was fascinated with the occult, and as a married woman and mother of two small children, I was holding regular séances in our home. I also started having visions and was in contact with a spiritual entity who said he was a Cherokee Indian who lived on the earth over two thousand years ago. At thirty-five, I received horrendous news and my life changed; I was told my mother was going to die. My prior beliefs of reincarnation brought me no consolation at the thought of her death. I found myself praying to a God whom I didn't know, making deals with him, and hoping he would listen. I cried out and said, "I don't know who you are or what you are, but if you keep her alive, I will spend the rest of my life following you!" |
